I've been working on the automake and gnulib conversion.  Things should mostly
be working; the remaining portability issues should be relatively easy to fix
now without having to jump through hoops.

You can try out in latest git version, or, once the upload mechanism to
alpha.gnu.org works again (it was stuck for the last hour at least), in
the following snapshot:

        ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/patch/patch-2.6.1.15-c86f.tar.gz

For the git version, you'll also need relatively recent versions of automake
and autoconf.
