seems to barf on semi-mangled git patches.  patch-2.6.1 runs fine.

$ patch -p1 -g0 -E --no-backup-if-mismatch < 0068_all_glibc-2.14-glibc-revert-
fseek-on-fclose.patch
patching file libio/Makefile
patching file libio/bug-fclose1.c
Git-style patch file contains a normal patch between line 182 and 186

patch program exited with status 2

i've got quite a number of patches that i extracted from git and then had to 
hand modify in order to make them apply to older versions ...
