[Bug-plotutils] Reading files to modify

I've hardly ever looked at postscript files so my questions may be more 
than a little vague.
A project has come to me that would be quite easy if I could modify a 
postscript file.
I know there are interactive editors but I need to do this from a C 
application that reads the needed modification data from a database.
I say modify but I would not be changing any of the existing data in the 
postscript file I just need to add more.
While reading

I see pl_newpl says "Currently, all Plotters are write-only, so infile is 
ignored."
Maybe libplot is not what I need.
Any suggestions?
I'm working in Fedora Core 5.
