    Calls to mkstemp create files with the -rw------- mode. It is

Ouch! I did not realize that. The final file shall have the same
attributes than the file being updated.

    I wrote a patch for recutl.c 1.1 that restores the initial file
    attributes. Are there some obvious counter-indications to this
    policy?

That approach sounds good to me.
