Follow-up Comment #1, bug #53776 (project recutils):
It seems this bug is fixed as of 1.7.90. The Ubuntu repositories still only
have 1.7, which is why I encountered the bug in the first place. (I’m unable
to fulfill the build dependencies—at least, according to “apt build-dep
recutils”—so I solved this problem crudely, by downloading the tarball and
copying, with sudo, the two “etc/*.el” files into
“usr/share/emacs/site-lisp”. Now I can switch between navigation and edit
mode just fine, it seems.)
