umh... tough decision. we tend to do that when we encounter gcc +
solaris/sunos. do you know if other platforms might require this, too?

the reason we're hesitating is: this is only required for the situation
1) gcc
2) solaris/sunos
3) shared libserveez
4) native ld
...only this combination seems to need this change... we can of course 
check this in configure... perhaps everything turns out good when libtool
starts to use a different ld, we dont know.

bottom line: we will come up with a solution in the next release. in the
meantime: find different platforms to test :-)
