The happy peace of Laverlaw had been flawed. I feltsomehow that we had the game in our hands, and had got over theworst snags. You had a letter from your father on your birthday three days ago? I realized I was in acleft stick and must conduct myself discreetly. He seemed to know all about Lord Clanroydenand to have a great opinion of him. Never were there such obviousincompatibles. Indeed, he scarcely listened when Lombard told him aboutit. Heseemed to wish to forget all that had happened in England, as if ithad been a bad dream. Miss Margesson was a good girl, and she seemed to share Annasconviction. He was aye awfu interestedin the English letters, comin as he did frae Carlisle. For a coupleof years the two had not met each other. I said cordially that I was glad that Annas relations werecarrying her off for a cruise. But as his dread of pursuit grew he haddropped all this, and had not seen her for nearly a year. I guessed that thiswas the Bletsos car, and that the man had gone to seek his master. Anna Smiths packing is being attended to, Miss Margesson? Somehow I felt that the latter event would not happenunless I managed to create a diversion. But I see theres twa leddyships, Leddy Clanroydenand Leddy Hannay. But he hadaltogether lost the hunted look. We never met the Stutzagain, and for all I know it is still patrolling the Carter Bar. I noted a baronetage on the table which had been movedfrom the stand of reference books. Shes very keen about this business, and willlike to know that Im doing my bit. I said cordially that I was glad that Annas relations werecarrying her off for a cruise. Sorry,Margie dear, but I couldnt tell that even to you.
