Many thanks for this review Stefano, it's hugely helpful!  I will fix
these and make a new release.  I have also just fixed the fact that
--with-pmdir is completely ineffectual, by adding

  AC_SUBST([PMDIR])

to configure.ac, and

  pmdir = $(PMDIR)

to Makefile.am.

But there is still the question of what the default value should be,
and for that I need further advice, so I will post my question to the
automake list.
