[Bug-tar] checksumming / file signatures question

Not a bug, but couldnt find any other email address... 

Has any work ever been done to add md5 (or other signature algo) to
files tar archives/restores/diffs ?  The particular feature i am looking
for would be while tar is archiving it would write a properly formatted
MD5SUM file...
