I can confirm seeing the same bug on Debian GNU/Linux 3.0r1, so the problem
is not specific to FreeBSD.
The problem is that the sparse file extraction code in tar 1.13.91 is
bollixed up somewhow. You'll probably run into this problem with any
GNU tar archive created with the --sparse option.
