[Bug-tar] Permission errors |

Greetings!
Forgive me if this is not relevant to you folks. But, Apple uses gnutar
in OS X and it is often(perhaps always) involked in their own
SoftwareUpdate program. Earlier this year I noticed that some of the
updates would not install and would return an error about making sure
that I had write permissions to some directory under /tmp. The directory
depends upon which user is executing the update and which program is
being updated. But, even if the user is root the error is manifested. By
running softwareupdate from the command line, I discerned that the error
occured when the tar command was executed to extract/install the
download. Is it possible that tar is being run as a different user? If
you have any ideas what could be causing this, I'd appreciate it and I
would be glad to post it on the Apple Discussion Groups as a number of
other people seem to be manifesting the problem as well.
Thanks!
