It would  be of interest if this is just one of the GNU tar multi volume 
extract 
errors or if the bug is caused by the multi volume creation process.... 

What happens when you try to use star

ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/star/aplha/ 

to extrat the multi volume archives into one file?
