Sorry for the confusion, I thought you were the reporter of the problem....

GNU tar has problems when one tape from a multi volume archive 
ends exactly at the end of one file or when the split takes place inside
a speudo file that holds file meta data.

For more excact information, it is too long ago for me to remember.
