[Bug-tar] Tar 1.23 freezing on a gzipped archive (doesn't happen with 1.22)

Hi,
I'm trying to use Tar to extract files from a gzipped archive. The command I'm running is: tar fkpxzv tinker.tar.gz
Everything works fine when I initially attempt to extract the files - the problem appears if I try to run the command again while the files from the initial extraction are still in place. With Tar 1.22, I get many errors of the form "Cannot open: File exists", after which it will terminate (the correct behavior). With Tar 1.23, there are no errors displayed. Instead, the files in the archive are listed until Tar indefinitely pauses midway through them. I've attached the output of Tar 1.23.
To make sure there were no other changes to my system, I downgraded only Tar from 1.23 to 1.22 and ran the comand again. My system is running Gentoo Linux, but I have other machines running other distributions, some with Tar 1.22 and others with 1.23, and their behavior is consistent with what's observed in Gentoo. The archive in question is available at http://tumbleweed.wustl.edu/~srunni/tinker/02/tinker.tar.gz Can anyone help me out?
