You incorrectly assumed I was using Sun's tar based on my post.
Sergey wanted to be sure the scope of this mailing list was clear,
which is his prerogative as the GNU tar maintainer.  No harm.  No
foul.

Thanks to everyone for their comments on this issue.  Tim's right - I
had no idea there *was* a POSIX standard for tarfiles, probably
because of the different name.  So I've learned quite a lot in this
conversation!
