This appears to be similar to the following bug report:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=587702
rmt got rewritten from scratch in tar 1.23, which could well
have caused the problem. However, we don't have a recipe
for reproducing the problem. (The command shown in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=587702
works for me.)
Can you do an "strace" or "truss" on the processes that
are hanging? That might help figure out what's going on.
