Michael, I believe this is the same duck that has broken tar for any use by 
amanda.  Test cases have been submitted, but no fix progress has been 
noted, and this bug has been out of the refrigerator long enough to develop 
an odor in this amanda users camp.  I've had to forcibly reinstall 1.23 at 
my site, and carefully uncheck tar every time I update the rest of the 
system.

You might be better to reinstall 1.23.
