Let me know if I can provide any other information about these changes
to the tar-snapshot-edit script.

(It seemed like sending intermediate versions of the script was overkill
for this situation, but if you prefer to have a more detailed change
history I could also post the middle version of the script, which has
the field-value-check function added but not the Perl-syntax fixes.)
