But with the proposed approach, -I /usr/bin/gzip behaves differently
from -I gzip.  Isn't that confusing?

Good point.  So perhaps we shouldn't add that complexity.  Still,
it'd be better if we didn't have the sort of confusion illustrated
above, somehow.
