Well, I've managed to solve the problem I had originally by
changing my Texinfo document (or, more precisely, changing the
literate programming tool--"TexiWEB"--that generates my Texinfo
document), so the stakes have been lowered for me.  My new
opinion is that this is worth doing if it would be useful for
someone else.  I think you'll probably have trouble finding
someone else, though, so it's doubtful whether it's worth the
time to do it.
