there are some title pages (without page numbers) and then contents
(numbered with roman numerals).  Thusly, there are 13 pages before page 1.

What you see in your pdf viewer is that the sequence number of the page in
the pdf file.

There is one confusing thing: when I open the pdf file (in xpdf), then
the left column contains list of chapters, but it doesn't contain a link
to "Contents".  So when you click to the first line in the left window,
you get to page 2 (15th page in the file), which is confusing.

I don't know how to fix it, but I believe Karl will find a solution.
