Well, there are some special variables in texinfo.tex already, although
I guess I have not documented them, so they don't really count. Anyway,
I don't see a reason to avoid it in principle. It's a way to help with
compatibility. Anyway, variable vs. new command is a side issue, I
didn't bring to bring that into the fray.
If that command is set then -I is ignored ...
Hmm. The right solution remains unclear to me. I don't necessarily
think my proposal is right either.
Writing some clear specification/documentation of what we *want* to
happen, i.e., how we want users to control image dir prefixes in each of
the output cases, seems like the way to get a handle on this. Do you
want to pursue that, or just let it lie?
