Aunt Elizabeth did know it, and it posed her, but she was all themore displeased with me for that. Why dont I like being called a puss, when cats are such nicethings? I feel more like writing poetry in spring than at any other time. Hes right, of course, and in my essays and stories I try topractise what he preaches. Perry is not the only one who gets into disgrace at New Moon. I like Uncle Oliver, but I am not much fonder of AuntRuth and Uncle Wallace than I ever was. But let him keep his pencil and brush off MY property. One would have been toomany in this year of grace! If people do not offer it to him he goes hungry, but hewill beg for his dog. It is certainly great fun to write a TRUTHFULobituary of some one you dont like. I could have been sarcastic with a vengeance. Oh, I am terribly afraid of him, and I was so glad he didnt comeinto the house that day. His face is wrinkled and shrivelled and he looks like anold, old monkey. They would be so dullnobody would read them. Star, promise me you will forgetthat book. Her father gives hereverything she wants, now that he has learned to love her. Nobody can keep on being angry if she looks into theheart of a pansy for a little while. The better my essays are the more he rages over them. I endured them to a certain point, and then the lid flew off. They read them aloud and commented on them, while I sat in a corner and knitted my stockings. Carpenter tells me that whenever I think a thingespecially fine I am to cut it out. I think you might write something that IS wanted. To-night I tried to write a description of Dean in my Jimmy-bookof character sketches. One would have been toomany in this year of grace! The poor thing lay there, almostexhausted from struggling, with SUCH a look in its black eyes. Carpenter tells me to cut a thing out I come round to hispoint of view and feel ashamed of it. You CAN be sure of it, I declared quite warmly.
