mp1e is currently writing only VCD format, not SVCD, so it would be fixed
rate anyway.
The packet size I was talking about deals with cd recording packets, not
MPEG systems packets. The advantage is that I can stop recording in the
middle of a track when the recorder and/or mp1e does not do exactly 176
kbytes/sec.

I think I am aware of most problems I might run into, after all this is
a thesis work and I have been thinking about it for months. I just have not
started implementing ;-)
