This work has already been done in the current development sources of
Wget, and will be in the 1.12 release, which I believe will take place
within the next couple of months.

In the meantime, if you're desperate, you could grab the bleeding-edge
sources; see <http://wget.addictivecode.org/RepositoryAccess>;
particularly the section on compiling from the repo sources.
