No, xboard does not do that.  You're probably using Crafty as the
chess engine. *Crafty* automatically saves games in the current working
directory in files named game.xxx.

Since that's an option to xboard, not Crafty, it doesn't cause Crafty
to change where it saves games.

Check the documentation for Crafty to find out how to change what it
does about saving games.  I don't know how offhand.
