I just see that my above number was including the Lua HTML manual
which wouldn't be included on Gentoo install media. Here's a breakdown
of the rest (compiled with gcc 4.5.2 and options -O2 -march=core2):

    15 kB  lua
   113 kB  luac
   188 kB  liblua.so.5.1.4
   335 kB  liblua.a
    46 kB  various small files, e.g. headers and man pages

Yes. I'll ask our package maintainers why they are installing the
static lib.
