Thanks for your interest. It'd be helpful if you could write to
bug-zile in future, as that helps gather scattered interest into
something more solid!

Zile is two different things, and neither is perhaps what you're
after, so you're quite right that adding Lua support (perhaps via
Guile?) to Emacs is probably necessary to get what you want:

1. A stripped-down Emacs clone.

2. A platform for experimenting with editors at a low level.

I rewrote Zile in Lua just to see if I could, and in the hope that it
would end up much shorter. It's not (yet) as compact as I'd hoped,
that is, enough to justify the work, but it compensates by being much
more hackable than when in C. Hence, the advantage of Lua is to make
it easier to maintain Zile (the legacy Emacs-subset) and also to hack
on various related projects (such as Gary Vaughan's Zi branch).

I for one have no intention of adding lots of extra Emacs
functionality (and intend to keep Zile minimal) but if anyone else is
so interested, they're welcome, of course.
