Addendum:
Zmacs is also mentioned in the "Active Regions" section of the XEmacs
user manual [3]:
| Active regions originally come from Zmacs, the Lisp Machine editor.
| The idea behind them is that commands can only operate on a region
| when the region is in an "active" state. Put simply, you can only
| operate on a region that is highlighted."
XEmacs also has some zmacs-* variables, for example zmacs-regions
which is the equivalent of GNU Emacs' transient-mark-mode.
