Portability is one important reason: X11 is a heavy requirement for
Windows users. On the other hand, X11 gives you multiple host-windows,
which is a handy feature...

I meant that we're concentrating on infrastructure rather than graphics,
just like the Slate project seems to be doing at the moment.
