Ah, I see: my fault.

I did *not* try to build in the git checkout - since I still run on some
custom modifications (optimisations to the scheduler).

In fact I found that the attempt to run "./identify.sh ." would only complain on "buildid" and "buildtag.h" not being found, which somehow made me confident that this would not what I need.

Great, I thought.
But then I ignored the snapshot and went straight to my git cloned
sources.

However I failed to build from there, I can't figure out how to get my
 buildtag.h
file.

"identify.sh $PWD" should generate this and is normally invoked at
the start of the build process. Can you add "set -x" at the start and
run "make ..." again, and show us the output.
