He barely noticed. He wasnt at his usual post, which was optimistic; at least he was making the rounds and keeping an eye on things. There would be no one in the roof gardens and walkways this time of night; I could be alone. It was quite revealing to examine some of the things that had floated to the surface. The safeguards were finally arranged to his satisfaction and we began our solitary and important business. Pay now and then we go. I must have made the turn into the stairs a split second ahead of their arrival. Thats not the major point though.
