However, it would appear that "multiline replies are allowed for any 
command" (RFC 2821, 4.2 SMTP Replies). Should not all the commands 
(e.g. mailFrom, rcptTo, etc) by able to handle a multiline reply then?

Perhaps it would be beneficial to enhance getResponse() itself to 
systematically handle multiline replies?
