It's funny, but I'm using the exact same arguments (i.e. consistent and
nonsurprizing behavior) to defend my position ;-) It's just that I value
compatibility with Sun higher than adhering to the spec.

In any case, the "spec" is hardly gospel. I guarantee you that if Sun fixes this bug, they will fix it by "fixing" the spec, rather than changing the behavior.

By the way there's a JDK bug number assigned for this now:
