[cp-patches] [generics] Merge #01

I'm committing a patch to the generics branch to merge the August changes
to Classpath HEAD.  The patch, being 400+K, is not attached, but is available
if anyone wants a copy.  However, it is largely a simple amalgamation of the
posts from August 2004.
