=================== BUG #974: FULL BUG SNAPSHOT ===================
Submitted by: egagnon Project: classpath
Submitted on: 2002-Aug-09 10:42
Severity: 1 - Ordinary Resolution: Fixed
Assigned to: cbj Status: Closed
Platform Version: None
Summary: REQUEST: Update to Classpath webpage
Original Submission: Hi!
Now that a stable version of SableVM has been released, I think it would be
appropriate to update the web page. Sable VM is now the easiest VM to get
running with Classpath; specially the JNI libraries. Being an interpreter,
SableVM allows to debug Classpath much more easily. For example, you can call
Runtime.getRuntime().traceInstructions(on) and traceMethodCalls(on). You can
also use a debugger like DDD to step one by one the execution of each bytecode
inplementation and inspect the local variables, stack and heap.
As I have already completed all the GNU copyright assignment paper work,
SableVM's native and class libraries are fully copyrighted by the FSF. I will
eventually hold a discussion on the mailing-list regarding the best way to
integrate SableVM's specific changes (which are not many) in Classpath's CVS.
The main current obstacle is that SableVM passes all the library code through
automatic code indenters: GNU indent for C code, 'astyle -jbs2' and 'cat -s'
for Java code. This, of course, inflates raw "diffs" with Classpath's CVS...
Thanks
Etienne

I've updated the comment on SableVM slightly. Perhaps I should include
verbatim the part of paragraph one starting with "Sable VM is now the
easiest..."? Let me know.
