I haven't investigated, but it may be that the above was
merely evidence that the older compiler,

  gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-48)

lacked the "knowledge" that error (1, ... always exits,
while the newer ones that you and I use already know about that.
