I've checked in a fix for (1) and (3), and for a link error that raised
its head once I got all the compile errors sorted out. I've applied a
fix locally for (2), but it's mixed in with Mark's patch from earlier.
Mark, do you want to check in your patch first, or should I just check
in the whole lot myself?
