data display not working?

I've been playing around with ddd, and in the data window I can get the
local variables and the arguments to display (using the relevant menu
options), but nothing else.  If I right-click on a thing and select
"Display*()", it spits it out in the gdb console window, but doesn't do
anything in the data window.  Likewise if I directly "graph display foo"
in the console, it prints it without sticking it in the data window.  It
sounds from the documentation like there are some powerful display
facilities in ddd, but I am having a very hard time finding them...

Oh: DDD version 3.2, on Solaris 2.7, with gdb 5.0.
