problems with strclass.h

I am trying to build DDD 3.3 from source.  My configuration step runs
smoothly but when I run the
make command i get a warning message about half way 
through the process. I get about 80 lines of warning 
messages and comments and the make command stops.  All
the comments are similar to:

strclass.h:1387:warning: the named return value extension is deprecated.
strclass.h:1387:Please see the documentation for details.
strclass.h:1387: In function 'string downcase (const string &)':

the "string downcase" is replaced in the other lines with
"string upcase" or "string capitalize" or "string reverse"
or something similar to that. Is there something I can do
to fix this and get DDD to install properly.
