cannot print COMMON variables

I am trying to use ddd to debug a legacy FORTRAN code with lots of COMMON 
blocks.  Every time I try to print a variable defined in an INCLUDE file 
with a COMMON block, it says:

No symbol "p" in current context

Is there some trick around this or are only local variables available?
