Just as a guess, might it have something to do with the old gcc using old STL iostreams, which had "freeze", whereas the new ("std::") iostreams do not, and return a different kind of string (std::string, rather than char *)?

autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.52
automake (GNU automake) 1.4-p5
gcc version 3.0.2
