This sounds like the problem where you need to set your character set
before starting DDD, as described in the PROBLEMS file.

Try

        LANG=C ddd

and see if that makes any difference.  Please let us know if this helps,
I'm leaning to forcing LANG to C in the DDD binary, since this problem
crops up a lot (it's a Motif issue).  Of course, if your filenames and
directories aren't limited to plain 7-bit ASCII, this fix probably won't
help...

BTW, are you using Motif or Lesstif?
