Yeah, there used to be bugs. I think they have been fixed in recent
versions.

It seems to be working for me. On the other hand, this box has been
upgraded recently, so it now has postgresql 7.2.1-2 (which seems to
have entered woody recently). Maybe you should try a dist-upgrade?
