I've fixed this. It was a bug I introduced a while back, but I could not
see it because there was an unitialized variable that hid the problem on
my build. I've fixed both of these problems.
Thank you very much for helping to sort this out - I will look to see if
it was in the 0.8.0 release, in which case it could explain the Windows
crash (not terribly likely).
