Re: [Denemo-devel] Pa_Initialize() is failing

Using strace I see that Pa_Initialize is trying to access /dev/dsp which
(no longer?) exists on my machine, instead there is /dev/dsp1
Does anyone know the ropes with this stuff? It seems that these
alternatively numbered device drivers are created when the standard ones
are already taken (presumably in some list of already-taken-names,
as /dev/dsp does not actually exist, but someone thinks it does). I get
that sort of thing if I boot with the midi controller switched on or not
switched on; in this case /dev/midi or /dev/midi1 is created.

Anyway the work around for the problem is to do

cd /dev
ln -s dsp1 dsp

Perhaps we should be telling portaudio to try harder? (I should mention
this bad behavior persists on re-boot, it seems to have started after
the latest Debian upgrade).
