Ok, I have chased this down
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.10/Documentation/user/lilypond/Parentheses#Parentheses
documents the behavior on v2.10 which is on Debian Lenny.
Using the gub installer that janneke built, I have run the same code on
2.13.x on windows, and it is working fine.
I'll put the parenthesize command into Denemo for notes, chords WHY.
