>From inside Denemo we can now generate sounds using the fluidsynth
library. We also have a built-in GM soundfont used by default.
However, in the GM spec channel 10 is reserved for percussion, with
each note making a different drum.
Can we tell fluidsynth to do this? Where would it get its percussion
sounds from?

My own interest is in providing pleasant and informative acoustic
feedback, especially when entering rhythms. For this purpose it would
seem most convenient to assign prog 1 to channel 1 and so on (exploiting
fluidsynth's ability to handle 128 "channels"). Then a pair of
noteon/noteoff calls to the fluidsynth library would be all that would
be needed to make a note of a given pitch/instrument/duration. If you
were doing real midi you would need separate program change messages to
get such a wide range of instruments.
