I am not knowledgeable enough to say how the configure program needs
adjusting to fix this, but I wonder if you realize there is a pre-built
binary to use for GNU/Linux?

I believe is a shell script which you can run (as ordinary user) to
install Denemo under your home directory.

Hopefully Jeremiah or one of the distro maintainers can comment on the
original question.
