You can just do it as a clef change right at the start of the staff
(i.e. before any notes)

I think it is, that's why I didn't go any further. I was thinking there
might be a workaround. (hmm, I was vaguely thinking about the octava
commands, but thinking that bit harder, the workaround is
Directives->Typesetter->Transposition->Open Octave Up and Down and Close
a LilyPond block.
Bracket the music with these and all should be well - ask if it is not
obvious what these { } blocks are doing.).
